"I started Tabletop Root Beer Shop because I wanted to create a space where people could come together over their shared love of root beer and board games, and feel welcomed and included, regardless of their background. As a black business owner, I also wanted to show that we can be successful and make a positive impact in our communities." Shawn Hurley

Board gamer and root beer lover!

Meet Shawn Hurley, a teacher and software engineer with a passion for root beer, board games, and adventure. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Shawn taught for a few years and migrated to New England before deciding it was time to make a change, and the journey west to Seattle began.

Shawn went back into software as he landed at a Seattle based tax firm, leveraging his talent for programming and engineering and paving the way for a thriving career in the tech industry. Driven by his passion for learning and growth, he pursued a Master's degree in software engineering from Carnegie Mellon before returning to the Northwest, where he worked on the server-side technology, networking, and storage at multiple software companies.

After discovering The Root Beer Store with its huge variety of root beers and unique sodas, Shawn was hooked. He decided to partner with Chug's Root Beer and More, which unfortunately closed, but his passion for root beer and board games led him to expand on the theme and create the Tabletop Root Beer Shop.

Shawn is an enthusiastic backpacker, scuba diver, and cyclist who gets a total kick out of playing cooperative and role-playing games, including Robinson Crusoe, Dungeons & Dragons, and Skyrim (take a closer look at that sweatshirt), which at one point he knew better than his own neighborhood (don't worry, he gets out more now).
